Student-Centered Teaching

Mathematical Mindsets- 3 Credits

In this course, students will read Mathematical Mindsets: Unleashing Students' Potential through Creative Math, Inspiring Messages and Innovative Teaching where author Jo Boaler delivers a plan to banish math anxiety and lays a foundation for mathematics success that anyone can build on. This text is perfect for students who have been convinced they are naturally "bad at math," by demonstrating how to turn self-doubt into self-confidence by relying on the "growth mindset" framework. Students will reflect what they’ve read to their own educational setting.

Strengths Based Teaching and Learning in Mathematics (K-6)- 3 Credits

Rather than focusing on what students haven’t mastered, this course identifies students' mathematical strengths.  Five key teaching turnarounds are highlighted: identify teaching strengths, leverage students’ strengths, design instruction from a strengths-based perspective, help students identify their points of power, and promote strengths in the school community. Each chapter provides opportunities to reflect and transfer practice while also sharing resources, activities, and tools that can be applied directly to the K- 6 classroom.
